Holistic & Integrative Medicine in Clinical Practice: An ABIHM Mini-Course

In this five-part video mini-course, you’ll gain clinical perspectives on bringing
integrative holistic medicine to the care of patients with a broad range of common
conditions

Drawn from the American Board of Integrative & Holistic Medicine’s
comprehensive certification course, this mini-program gives you an opportunity to
learn online from renowned ABIHM faculty members, all of whom are pioneers in
the implementation of holistic medicine in modern clinical practice.

The ABIHM is a leader in educating—and certifying—physicians in the
philosophy and practice of holistic medicine. Since 2000, the Board has certified
1,600 Diplomate physicians through its annual course and exam.

The five lectures offered here on HEE may be purchased individually or as a
complete 5-part set. In both cases, you’ll be able to experience the high quality
content available in ABIHM’s annual certification course.

    Course Faculty

    Erminia “Mimi” Guarneri, MD
Dr. Guarneri is the founder and the medical director of the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, La Jolla, CA

Board-certified in cardiology, internal medicine, nuclear medicine and holistic medicine, Dr. Guarneri received her MD from SUNY Medical Center in New York, where she graduated number one in her class. She served her internship and residency at Cornell Medical Center, and completed cardiology fellowships at both NYU and Scripps Clinic, later serving as an attending in interventional cardiology at Scripps, where she placed thousands of coronary stents.

Recognizing the need for a more holistic approach, she pioneered the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine where she uses state-of-the-art cardiac imaging and lifestyle change to diagnose, prevent and treat cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Guarneri has authored several articles that have appeared in leading cardiology journals. She is the author of The Heart Speaks, a poignant collection of stories from heart patients who have benefited from integrative medicine.

    David Rakel, MD
Dr. Rakel is Director of the Integrative Medicine Program at the University of Wisconsin, and an associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine.

After medical school at Baylor, Dr. Rakel completed a family practice residency in Greeley, Colorado. He spent the next five years in rural practice as one of two physicians staffing a 14-bed hospital in Driggs, ID. As medical director for Grand Targhee Ski resort, he developed an interest in sports medicine and received his CAQ in 1999. He then completed a two-year fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona from 1999-2001. Dr. Rakel joined the UW Department of Family Medicine in 2001.

He is board certified in family medicine, holistic medicine and sports medicine, and certified in Interactive Guided Imagery. He is co-editor for the Textbook of Family Medicine and Editor for Integrative Medicine, now in its third edition.

    Patrick Hanaway, MD
Dr. Hanaway is the co-founder of Family to Family, a holistic family practice in Asheville, NC.  He earned his Bachelors degree in Molecular Biology at the University of Wisconsin in 1981 and went on to complete his MD at the University of Washington (St. Louis) and his Family Practice residency training at the University of New Mexico.  Dr. Hanaway’s areas of research include muscle biology, neurochemisty, lipid metabolism, public health, preventative medicine, immunology, digestion and nutrition.

Dr. Hanaway is a Past-President of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine, and a frequent lecturer for the Institute of Functional Medicine, speaking on the clinical application of nutrition and genomics. He has been initiated as a Marakame (Shaman) by the Huichol people in the Sierra Madres of Central Mexico.

    Wendy Warner, MD
Dr. Warner is founder & director of Medicine in Balance, a holistic medical practice in Langhorne, PA.

After medical school at the University of Tennessee, she completed a conventional residency in ObGyn at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. In 1990, she began searching for a more complete way of managing chronic conditions and healing her patients and herself.

Dr Warner focused on botanicals, learning from nationally known professional herbalists and early physician pioneers such as Dr Andrew Weil. She also has a strong interest in Energy medicine, which led her to become a Master Reiki practitioner. In addition, she began incorporating yoga and meditation into her own daily life. She is a Past-President of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine, and was recently featured on The Dr. Oz Show, as one of Dr. Oz’s “Fantastic Four.”

    There are no requirements

    Learning Objectives

    • Describe the relationship of family cohesiveness and chronic diseases. Define ways to effectively manage patients by assessing family and social relationships. Illustrate the relative weights of perception and external influences of physiology on health.
    • Define ‘Functional Medicine’ and its clinical applications. Describe the fundamental components of ‘Functional Medicine’:a systems-oriented approach to healing that addresses the underlying causes of disease (functional physiologic imbalances) engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. Apply a patient-centered timeline for better understanding root causes and triggers of complex chronic disease.
    • Define non-specific variables and evidence behind the significant healing impact in the patient encounter. Review literature showing that the clinical relationship may be more powerful than the pills or supplements that are prescribed. Discuss key non-specific variables that can be used within the clinical encounter to trigger salutogenesis (the creation of health).
    • Review the limitations of our current mental health care paradigm. Elaborate a basic approach to evaluating a typical patient. Outline useful tools for specific psychiatric complaints.
    • Review the natural hormonal changes in menopause and how they are affected by lifestyle. Assess safety and efficacy of herbs in treatment of menopause symptoms. Discuss the rationale and safety/efficacy of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.

    Target Audience

This unique internet educational experience is for health care providers who wish to expand their clinical competencies to include a mind-body-spirit approach to healing.

  • Lecture 1: The Science of Connection

    Erminia “Mimi” Guarneri, MD:

In this lecture, pioneering integrative cardiologist Dr. Mimi Guarneri will describe the impact of emotional, familial, and social factors on human physiology and the ways in which these factors influence the risk of cardiovascular disease and other major disorders. She will define 10 core principles of integrative practice, describe ways to effectively manage patients by assessing family and social relationships, and offer practical recommendations on how to leverage social support as a clinical intervention.

  • Lecture 2: Introduction to Functional Medicine

    Patrick Hanaway, MD:

In this lecture, Functional Medicine pioneer Dr. Patrick Hanaway, will describe the fundamental principles of this emerging and clinically impactful paradigm.
A systems-oriented approach to healing that addresses the underlying causes of disease (functional physiologic imbalances), Functional Medicine is based on the core concept that chronic diseases result from disturbed metabolism and a poor match between genetics and environment. In practice, the Functional Medicine model effectively re-engages both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership, enabling both to address the root causes and triggers of complex chronic disease.

  • Lecture 3: Placebos, Nocebos & the Healing Power of Intention

    David Rakel, MD:

In this lecture, integrative family physician Dr. David Rakel will review the evidence showing the profound impact that interpersonal practitioner-patient dynamics have on clinical outcomes. He will review literature showing that the clinical relationship itself may be more powerful determinants of outcome than the medications, supplements or other clinical interventions.  He will also share key insights and practical suggestions for how to interact during clinical encounter to trigger “salutogenesis”-- the creation of health.

  • Lecture 4: Holistic Approaches to Adult Psychiatry

    Scott Shannon, MD:

In this lecture, pioneering holistic psychiatrist Dr. Scott Shannon, will challenge the limitations of our current mental health care paradigm, and outline a new, more holistic approach for evaluating and caring for people with common psychosocial and cognitive disorders.  He will also describe effective non-pharmacologic protocols for treatment of depression and anxiety based on nutrition, stress management, botanical therapies, and judicious use of specific supplements.

  • Lecture 5: Menopause: A Powerful Transition

    Wendy Warner, MD:

In this lecture, holistic gynecologist Dr. Wendy Warner reframes this important transition in women’s lives, looking at it from a comprehensive whole-systems view. She details the interconnection of hormonal and metabolic cycles, outlining the ways in which nutritional and lifestyle factors can affect reproductive hormone patterns—for better and for worse. Dr. Warner will review the safety and efficacy of herbs commonly used for menopause symptoms, and discuss the rationale and safety/efficacy of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.
